  1. How to read critically (i.e., a book, magazine article, newspaper, P&L statement, web traffic report, etc.).
  2. How to write well. (this could be an email, letter, report, blog, or living will).
  3. How to debate and speak in front of large audiences.
  4. How to create impromptu arguments and analysis (this may be the number one business skill of all time and I'd hire someone with this skill set versus a Harvard graduate any day).
  5. How to figure out what is right and wrong (ethics) and identify with different sorts of people and cultures (this is important in the modern workforce, think how different your job is from what you see on Mad Men each week).
  6. How to apply logic to any problem.
  7. How to think strategically or see the "big picture."
  8. How to think about a problem by deconstructing the big picture and looking at the details.

  1. It only teaches you 'how', but I don't think there's a guarantee that you will. After all, those who try to write philosophically are usually bad writers, and it is also quite common that moral philosophers are those who just don't know what is right and wrong.

  3. Well... I am not saying that training in philosophy is not useful or beneficial at all. I just don't think the idea is accurate that one thinks more clearly or critically because of doing philosophy. To think so is quite misleading, because it is not that 'philosophy' is doing the trick. Any proper training in any academic subjects should have the same effect of making critical thinking a habit and is helpful to those good things (apart from telling good from wrong) you said brought by learning philosophy.

Or, do you think 'philosophy' is synonymous with 'thinking clearly and critically'?

By the way, I think Dworkin is one of the philosopher whose importance is quite overestimated, at least in certain topics, though I might be wrong on this. And I agree with that Dworkin is very active on various social issues, which is a good thing. But I just don't think he is really doing any serious philosophical work when arguing for or against those moral controversies. The reason is simple: you just don't need to be a philosopher to be a moral person, and philosophical sophistication is not what makes things morally right. Are you saying that we should turn EVERYONE into philosophers for a better world?

然後我看不太懂為什麼「you just don't need to be a philosopher to be a moral person, and philosophical sophistication is not what makes things morally right.」會是「I just don't think he is really doing any serious philosophical work when arguing for or against those moralcontroversies.
